How to Choose a Family Photographer

How to Choose a Family Photographer

Choosing a family photographer can be overwhelming. My parents never hired a family photographer so when it came to choosing my own, it was hard and overwhelming, so I have a few key points that will help you choose a family photographer.

Choosing a Family Photographer based on their style

First things first, what’s your vibe? Do you dig those spontaneous, laughter-filled shots, or are you more of a formal, posed family? Are you all about those vibrant colors, or do you fancy the classic black and white elegance? Figuring out your style preference will lead you straight to the photographer who can bring your vision to life. My photography style is naturally posed images where lots of candid photos are taken.

The next thing you should look at is their editing style. There are so many styles out from bright and airy to moody and dark. Make sure to stalk their portfolio or website to check for their style and if it fits your taste.

Check out their Reviews

When I go on Amazon, I always check out the reviews of an item to get a feel of what I am buying. Same goes for choosing a family photographer. Read the good and bad reviews. Are the bad reviews actually based on the family photographer’s work and customer service, or is the client being unreasonable? Did the photographer respond to the reviews? My Google reviews will let you tell you that not only is my photography style consistent, but that I truly do love what I do.

Budget and Services Offered

Every family photographer is different with different packages and different services. Here are some key things to look for when choosing a family photographer:

  • Budget: before you book, you need to have a budget. Keep in mind, Florida photographers range all over the place. Here is a breakdown, from experience, of the quality of photographer based on price:
    • $20-$250: Beginner photographer with very little experience/ mostly likely building their portfolio
    • $250-$450: Intermediate photographer with some experience
    • $500+: Photographer with loads of experience whose price reflects that
  • Services
    • Do they offer bump to baby packages? If you think you want to document your baby’s milestones, a package is probably the best choice. The only package I have is the bump to baby where you get a maternity photography session, lifestyle newborn photo session, and 1 year old milestone photo session.
    • Do they offer family sessions and are there outfit changes? My photo sessions are up to 1 hour, and you do not need to pay for any outfit changes.

Trust Your Gut When Choosing Your Family Photographer

Gut feelings are called that for a reason – trust them! If a family photographer gives you good vibes, roll with it. And if your bestie says, “Yep, that’s the one!” – listen to them! Sometimes, our instincts and the people who know us best lead us to the perfect choice.

So there you have it, folks – your guide to choosing the family photographer of your dreams. Remember, this is about capturing your unique story, your laughter, and all those crazy, wonderful moments. Get out there, find your photographer, and let the memories roll!
